Hawarden Independent, May 24, 1951

J. H. Johnston, 77, a resident of Hawarden the past 25 years, died last Wednesday at his home.

A son of Mr. & Mrs. H. T. Johnston, he was born June l0, 1873, in Iredell County, North Carolina. He lived in the south until he was 18 when he moved to Illinois and later to Huron, SD, where he worked a number of years. About 1905 he came to Hawarden and established a livery business.

On December 24, 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Moline of Sioux City. After his marriage he continued to live in Sioux City for a number of years. He worked as boiler maker for a railroad company and later was transferred to Sioux Falls. After a serious illness he returned to Hawarden to live.

He is survived by the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Moser of Sioux City and Mrs. Harold Knight of Alexander, MN; one brother and three sisters, living in North Carolina; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at the Barnard Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Nelson officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.
