Military service: Enlisted in the United States Air Force (about 1963), and was a billeting clerk at Biggs AFB in El Paso, TX; honorably discharged

Employment: After his military service, Gary was employed by Layland Insulation in Audubon, IA for several years. He then began driving for Harlan Rendering Works in Harlan, IA until it closed. He was transferred to the Carroll Rendering Works in Carroll, IA and worked there for many years. He had several odd jobs until he got a job at Jiffy Jet, filling cartridges for printers and computers. Gary worked there for 15 years until he retired and moved back to Harlan.
