A Pioneer Settler Called to His Reward

Mr. P. Gallagher, well known to every one of our town departed this life, fortified by the Sacraments and consoled by a faithful wife and loving children, at his residence south of town last Saturday night.

Mr. Gallagher was born in Mayo county, Ireland, in 1825. He left his native country when young to make a home and friends among strangers. He settled in Onenda county, New York, where in a few years he married; but shortly after moved to Wisconsin, thence to Minnesota. Desiring to procure a permanent home for his family, he took advantage of the excellent opportunity famished by the homestead grant.

In 1869 Mr. Gallagher visited this region and laid claim to the farm now occupied by his family. He was one of the first settlers; indeed, we may say the first permanent settler LeMars. It is useless to relate his subsequent history.

He needs no monument to perpetuate his stay on earth. He leaves a livingmonument of justice, righteousness and holiness in an exemplary family reared and nurtured under his fatherly care.

The funeral cortege left the residence shortly after nine o’clock Tuesday morning, and the vast concourse that assembled to pay a last tribute to a departed friend truly manifested the high esteem in which he was held by the residents of LeMars and the surrounding contry. The Holy Sacrifice of Mass and other funeral ceremonies were performed in St. James church. Rev. J. P Barren gave a very appropriate sermon, replete with sentiments of sympathy for the bereaved wife and friends.

Mrs. T. A. Kelly, OF Greeley Center, Neb.; Sister Mary Leo, of Omaha, Neb.; J. H. Gallagher, of Doon Bank, Doon, Iowa; Dr. F. J. Gallagher, of Sheldon, Ia.; children of the deceased, arrived in time to accompany their father’s remains to their last resting place.
