Elmer Leo Byers, the son of Robert and Anne (Treanor) Byers, was born at home in Osceola County, Iowa on August 7, 1920. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hartley. He received his education in rural schools near his home.

Elmer was a technical sergeant with the 837th Bomb Squad. He served his time in the Air Force, serving in the U.S. and England.

He was united in marriage to Orpha Leth on July 12, 1942 in Worthington, Minnesota. They lived and fanned their entire life in the May City and Hartley areas. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in May City where he held various offices.

Elmer died at the McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls, South Dakota on August 15, 1996 at the age of 76 years, nine days.

Elmer is survived by his wife; two daughters and one son and spouses: Maria and Wally Petersen of Hartley, Robert and Shelley Meier of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Steven and Kris Byers of Hartley; five grandchildren; one brother, Donald of Spencer, and three sisters: Gladys Riedemann and Mary Sullivan, both of Spencer, and Lillian Dempsey of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Emmett Robert, Francis James and William John; and two sisters: Violet Leona and Darlene Faye.

Funeral services in memory of Elmer Leo Byers were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, August 19, 1996, at St. John's Lutheran Church at May City. Pastor David Jacob officiated. Casket bearers were Roger Groff, Jeff Thee, Ron Sterk, Jerry Petersen, Wayne Schaa and Randy Byers. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
