Charles L. Hyde had lived in Sanborn for over half a century and left here in October 1937, when failing health compelled him to give up living alone in his home which is now owned and occupied by the B. C. Timmons. His passing brought sorrow to many friends here who respected him as a man and loved him as a neighbor, friend and associate. He and his wife were staunch workers in the church and in community affairs.

Charles L. Hyde was born January 21, 1860 at Clayville, Oneida county, New York and departed this life April 21, 1939 at the Sioux Valley Sanitarium, Sioux Falls, S. D.

He was the youngest child born to Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hyde and came to this great northwest in the early years — 1883.

He was married to Miss Ida H. Cummings, of Brainerd, S. D., December 19, 1883 and to this union were born three children, two dying in infancy. His wife also preceded him in death on January 28, 1935.

Surviving him are his son, Ray C. Hyde and two grandchildren, Raymond and Elizabeth Hyde, of Sioux Falls; a sister, Mrs. W. R. Turner, of Eugene, Oregon and a host of friends.

Mr. Hyde entered the railroad service in March, 1883 and came to live in Sanborn in the year 1885, serving on the C. & W. and the C. M. & St. P. He retired from service as an engineer in 1935 after 53 years of consecutive service on the railroad. He was a member of the Onyx Lodge A. F. & A.M. of Sanborn, a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers No. 131, and also was a member of the Presbyterian Church at the time of his death.

Funeral services were conducted here Monday afternoon in the Presbyterian church for Charles L. Hyde, a pioneer railroad engineer and early settler of Sanborn. The Rev. W. N. Fulcomer had charge of the services and Mrs. R. H. Leonard and Mrs. Ellis Miller sang, "In the Garden" and "Abide With Mee", accompanied by Mrs. Ethelyn Stevens. Henry Kissler, Sam Omer, Earl Mayne, Lloyd McDonald, Ed Love and Guy Melvin were pallbearers; burial was in the family lot in Roseland cemetery.
