Thanks very much for the reply, Candice.

I don't have any info on David's parents or siblings. His children I have as William, Timothy, Florence, Laura, and Myrtle.

In the time since I posted about David, Caroline and William, I broke down and joined Ancestry.com. While I haven't had the time to totally mine the website for its little nuggets, I have come up with a little information on William that you may or may not have. I haven't yet put together how "Uncle Frank, Uncle Jack & Uncle Lawrence" (see below) fit in the picture, but I have found a picture of who I think is "Uncle Jack". The caption says: "Crew members of a Kettle Valley work train posed for the camera at Princeton sometime in 1927. Engineer Jack Vader on left." I also found a document from the British Columbia District, Kettle Valley Division of the Canadian Pacific Railway Co., that lists the "seniority of the foremen in the track department and class "A" sectionmen, January 1st, 1945". Listed #14 is L.F. Vader of Okanagan Falls who apparently made sectionman "B" class on 5 Jan. 1921 and made foreman on 20 Apr. 1922. I believe this to be the "Uncle Lawrence" referred to below. I can email copies of these documents if you'd like.

I have extensive information on the Crooks family if your interested in that. After I've mined Ancestry for all it's worth, I'll be back in touch.

Caroline Crook was born on 1 Jan 1832, probably in Michigan. She died 31 December 1906 in State Center, Marshall Co IA. Caroline was married to David Winslow Vader who is believed to have been born in Edwardsburg, MI. He was a civil war vet and survivor of Andersonville, enlisted in Company I infantry 112th. David was captured and left Andersonville alive. His son William was born in Illinois before leaving for Iowa. William's son Delbert is the great grandpa of Tami Vader Bongolan who contributed this information to us.

David and Caroline's son William lived in Iowa and his son Delbert later moved to McKenzie County North Dakota where Grandpa Alvin (grandpa of Tami) was born and lived his entire life. About the time that Delbert left for North Dakota, William, Uncle Frank and Uncle Jack, and another son, Uncle Lawrence moved to Penticton, Okanagan, BC, Canada and worked on the Kettle Railroads. William's daughter Olive married a model T chauffer named Ernie and didn't have children

The Kettle Valley Railroad

In the year 1887, silver ore was discovered in the Kootenays. Soon American miners were taking over this corner of British Columbia and the money flowed south of the border. This became a political issue, which would elect or defeat future provincial governments. The two remaining railway giants, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Great Northern Railway, an American railway would be vying for the control of the rail transport from the Kootenays. Starting in the year 1893 and continuing for many years, these two feuding railways constructed short railways connecting towns that were springing up in this region of B.C. In 1896 the surveying of the Crowsnest Pass started and the CPR line into the Kootenays was finished in the year 1898. By 1900 the first CPR rolled into Midway. The CPR now had a railway into the Kootenays from the east, but still no connection to the west coast.

In 1910 the construction of the Kettle Valley Railway started. The hardships were many, and construction costs were high. Andrew McCullogh was the chief engineer and nothing would stand in his way of completing this railway. Against all the hardships, the Kettle Valley Railway was finished on July 31, 1916. For the first time there was daily passenger and freight service from Vancouver to Nelson. The KVR started its downward slide in 1949 when Highway # 3 (the Hope Princeton) opened. During the next few years, obviously to keep the KVR running was no longer feasible. In 1962 they removed the Coquihalla section of tracks. In January of 1964 the last passenger train ran from Merritt to Penticton and onto Midway and finally Nelson. The Kettle Valley Railway was closed.
