Clyde B. Newell, 72, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill. Services were held 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Eddyville, the Rev. Gregory Williamson and Rev. Gary McDonough officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery in Eddyville.

He was born Jan. 11, 1924, in Eddyville to Albert and Alice Ealan Murphy Newell. He married Helen Barnett July 6, 1943, in Chicago, Ill. She died Dec. 5, 1990, in Des Moines. He married Jackie White Weatherwax April 18,1992, in Des Moines. He graduated from Eddyville High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and went through training at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS San Jacinto, a converted carrier for over two years. He returned to Eddyville after the war and started his own welding business and was in business for seven years. In 1954 he started teaching at a one room rural school; graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teaching College in 1958 with a B.S. in education, and from Drake University with a M.S. in school administration in 1959. From 1954 until his retirement in 1977 from education, he was a teacher, an elementary principal and for the last 14 years of his career, he was superintendent of schools During retirement he raced and bred standard bred race horses. He later was Blakesburg High School principal and superintendent for two years.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mike Newell of Bowling Green, Mo., and Pat Newell of Hannibal, Mo.; a daughter, Cindy Wiederin of Des Moines; three stepsons, Charles Weatherwax of Pocahontas, Terry Weatherwax of Manchester, and David Weatherwax of Delhi; a stepdaughter, Jo Anna Francis of Palmer; six grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Newell of Oskaloosa, Cloyd Newell of Hannibal, Mo., and Carroll Newell of Marshalltown; and two sisters, Alice Hols of Eddyville and Nadine Armbruster of Lake Keomah.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Barnett Newell; his parents; and two brothers. Eddyville Funeral Chapel was in charge of funeral arrangements.
