John B. Ryder died last Friday evening, October 21, aged 75 years to the day. His death was caused by dropsy, and his sickness was of short duration. Deceased was born October 21, 1823, at Painsville, Ohio, and afterwards moved to Illinois. He enlisted and served in the Mexican war under General Scott. He came to Louisa county in 1856. He then possessed considerable money and was an important factor in various business enterprises of that day, notably the "Air Line railroad." Mr. Ryder was a man of considerable intelligence, possessing an inborn genius, and it is said that he invented the first corn dropping attachment of a corn planter and also the rolling corn cutter. Like many other men he had his faults, but withal a kind hearted man. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. T. S. Pool, interment occurring at Wapello cemetery.
