The death of Mr. George W. Breneman which occurred at his home, this place, Monday afternoon, did not come altogether as a surprise, thought few were expecting the sad event to come quite so soon. Mr. Breneman was born at Maytown, Pennsylvania, January 25, 1840. Was the oldest of a large family of children, most of whom, with the mother, now over ninety years of age, survive him. He enlisted in the Tenth Penns., infantry in 1861, being one of the first to go to the front. On the expiration of his service he re-enlisted and was assigned to the charge of a government vessel and continued in that capacity to the close of the war.

On August 26, 1862, he was married to Miss Elmira J. Grosh, who survives him. To them were born three children. One, a daughter, died in infancy, the two surviving ones are Mrs. Cora Pearce, of East St. Louis and George B., who has always lived with his parents. In 1871 the Brenemans, with a number of neighbors from Pennsylvania, came to Iowa and settled in and around Columbus City. Five years later he moved to this place, which was his home until the end. Mr. Breneman was a good citizen and a man of local prominence. Has been mayor of the town, many times a member of the town council and a justice of the peace.

Mr. Breneman has been in poor health for more than two years, but he has been able to be around town the most of the time. It was only a day or two before the end that the indications were for a speedy dissolution. The funeral occurred at the Methodist church at 10 o'clock today under the auspices of the K. P., the I. O. O. F., and the G. A. R. fraternities, in each of which he was an honored membership. The funeral sermon was preached by Comrade J. O. Kendrick. The pall bearers were Hon. C. A. Carpenter, E. R. Lacey, Hon. F. M. Molsberry, E. P Shellabarger, Coroden McDaniel and M. R. Edmondson. Interment was in Columbus City cemetery.
