Mrs. Esther A. Axtell was born in Franklin county, Ohio January 12, 1836. She was consequently a little less than seventy years of age. Her maiden name was Ross, August 27, 1854, she was married to P. M. Axtell, of the same state. He with eight of the nine children born to them, live to mourn her loss. Their marriage occurred at Iowa City in 1853. Their home continued in Iowa and Johnson county till 1871. The family first lived at Old Clifton, subsequently at Morning Sun, Wapello and Columbus City. They moved to Kansas in 1900, making their home at Foreuask until her death. The children are Martin E., residence unknown; Elizabeth Shannon, of Kansas; Alice O. Wilson, of Wapello; Phileto R. and Perry E., of this place; Minnie B. Wall, of Newport; Lottie Kemp, of Kansas and Electa Blair, of New Boston, Illinois. The only member of the family of children deceased is Amanda Potzius who died many years ago, near Bard. Mrs. Axtell was a member of the U. B. church, her father being a minister of the gospel connected with that denomination. Her funeral was preached by Rev. Wm. Ballard of the same society, in the Reformed church, this place. Interment was in the Indian Creek cemetery.
