ELLEN GUZZLE LEE.
Death is always a surprise. It is ever on humanity's track. It is often unheralded but more often preceded by illness and sometimes by long and painful ones. But when it comes so noiseless in its footfalls so insidious its approach, so quickly does it do its work that the prepared one surprisedly finds himself in heaven and dear ones left are shocked by the suddeness of the leave-taking. For years Mrs. Ellen Lee has been an invalid. Often and often has she been so near the river's brink she could hear the dip of the boatsman's oar, then turned and slowly climbed the bank of strength. On Friday last the foe renewed its attach and she lay down in pain never to rise again. Pain with her ceased Sunday morning just after the breaking of the dawn. She was born in Marion, June 17th, 1864, the daughter of Daniel and Nancy Guzzle. Marion has always been her home. She was married October 29th, 1889, by Rev. A.S> Marshall, D.D. to Mr. Joseph Lee. A little son was born to the new made home September 5th, 1893. Mrs. Lee's mother passed away May 31st, 1886. Of the family that remain beside the husband and child, there are three sisters, Izora, now Mrs. Eiber and Anna, both of Marion, and Alice now Mrs. Horan of Cedar Rapids; there are four brothers, Lincoln of Anamosa, Thadeus of Colorado, Charles and Harley at home with their father.
Twelve years ago as a young girl Mrs. Lee gave herself to God and joined the Methodist Episcopal church. She has remained a member ever since. Poor health has kept her much of the time from church. The last time I remember to have seen her present was at a Wednesday evening prayer meeting with her little son Marlin. Domestic in her tastes, retired in manner, never strong, often unable to meet the simplest duties of her home, she was not widely known, but I think she knew God and God owned her as His child. Her last days were full of expressed hope in Him; she smiled as she felt the hours of earth were for her numbered, for to depart and be with Christ was far better. Happy here in her home, still happier in the home not made with hands.
The funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church at three p.m., on Monday, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J.G. Van Ness, assisted by J.A. Seaton. Mesdames Bowman and Van Ness and Messrs. Esgate and Mills sang very sweetly; the body was laid to rest in the city cemetery.
