The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette (part of a long column) Saturday September 18, 1897
A SAD CASE.
DIPHTHERIA THREATENS THE TOWN OF MARION.
Parents of a Child Dead of Diphtheria do Not Heed the State Laws in Such Cases Provided--A Sad Condition of Facts Alleged.
The following is a matter of utmost importance to the public and has been brought to the notice of The Gazette:
Last Wednesday little Grace Wood, a child 6 years old, who is the daughter of Charles Wood and wife of Marion, of No. 635 Ninth avenue, was taken sick with diphtheria. She had been slightly indisposed for several days past, but not until a few hours after the physician was called had her sickness developed so far as to be pronounced diphtheria. The case was immediately reported to the health officer, W.H. Bailey, M.D. and that evening she was quarantined at the home of her father.
The disease proved to be of the most malignant form and progressed very rapidly and at 6:30 p.m. Sunday death resulted. Up to this time all proper precautions had been taken, it is stated, for the protection of the general public.
