Some one who was kind enough to send me the marriage record of my Great Grandparents, Patrick Gibbons and Anna O'Malley Gibbons [her name was spelled as Nancy O. Mealy in the record] on August 30, 1857, in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, from 'Marriage Records, Lee County,Iowa, Book 2',Page 66, listed the marriage as 'by J. M. Villars'.
Was J. M. Villars a Catholic Priest or justice of the peace or the person who recorded the marriage? If he was a priest, what Church did he serve in Keokuk in 1857?
