Jim, I have been researching the Shields family from Virginia to Tennessee to Ohio to Iowa during the last week. I have found that a "John F. Shields" married Eliza Jane Denison on 9 Oct 1834 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. The source was LDS Film 0344452, Ohio Marriage Records, 1808-1873, Ohio Probate Court (Hamilton Co.). According to the 1850 and 1860 census records, Eliza J. was born about 1820 in Ohio. She would have been a young bride in 1834. What was your source that Eliza J. Dawson was his wife? Perhaps I have the wrong "John F. Shields." Also thanks for the posting on Fidelia Benadom prior to her marriage to John F. Shields.
