Iowa's Grand Old Man after an active and useful life of nearly 81 years, quietly and peacefully passed away at his home in Iowa City, Saturday afternoon. The funeral took place at 2 p.m. Tuesday of this week and was attended by friends from all parts of the country. Samuel J. Kirkwood was elected Governor of Iowa three times, the last time in 1875 by a majority of 30,000. He has served the state as United States Senator, and the nation as secretary of the interior, but for the last 15 years has lived in retirement at his beautiful home in Iowa City. His decline in health has been gradual and for more than a year he has patiently awaited the hour of dissolution.
