Kenneth Dean Van Veen
March 5, 1942 ~ March 9, 2024 (age 82)

Kenneth 'Kenny' Dean Van Veen, 82, of Newton died on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at his residence. A private family graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton, followed by a coffee time at the Monroe American Legion from 4 to 6 p.m. that is open to friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Kenny’s name be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Kenny, the son of John and Gladys (Verwers) Van Veen, was born March 5, 1942, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1960 before serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1962 until 1966, which included a year in Vietnam, followed by 2 years in the Marines Corp Reserve. While serving, Kenny earned a Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. He married Kathy Vander Ploeg in 1967 and had three children together, before later divorcing. On August 27, 1987, Kenny was united in marriage with Sheryl Sille-Hunt in Bethany, Missouri. He worked as a car salesman for 57 years, starting out at Vander Ploeg Motors, before moving to Lauterbach’s Buick GMC. Kenny enjoyed fishing, his favorite week of the year was his annual fishing trip to Canada, and Chicago Cubs Baseball. He also attended every Dowling football game, as well as being a regular at Prairie City-Monroe activities to watch his grandkids participate.

Kenny is survived by his children, Lisa (Bob) Van Ryswyk of Monroe, Laurie Boell of Monroe, and Ryan Van Veen of Waukee; step-children, Kelly (Gary) Helm of Ames and Rich Hunt of Newton; grandchildren Logan (Cassandra Adamson) Van Veen, Dayton (Haley Morey) Boell, Gatlin Boell, Andrew Van Ryswyk, and Abby Van Ryswyk; step-grandchildren, Kelsey (Marty Ackerman) Cox, Autumn (Levi) Burton, Christian Simmons, Abbey Hunt, Claire Hunt, and Annie Hunt; step-great-grandchildren, Amelia and Sam Burton; siblings, Dave (Diana) Van Veen, and Duane Van Veen; sister-in-law, Donna Van Veen; In-laws, Donita (Dave) Carpenter, Mary Lou Villafaerte, Ruby Vebon, and Karen Vermillion; mother of his children, Kathy Van Veen; as well as many nieces and nephews and many friends and loyal customers. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sheryl Van Veen; and brother, Dennis Van Veen.
