Clear Creek News – James Schroyer was born near Freeport, Stephenson county, Illinois, Sept. 17, 1843, and died at his home at Ira, Ia., March 31, 1923, aged seventy-eight years, six months and four days. Mr. Schroyer was active and well until a few weeks ago, when he had a severe cold and later a stroke of paralysis.
When a child, his parents moved to Green county, Wisconsin. In 1858 he came to Clear Creek, Jasper county, Iowa. With the exception of sixteen years in Kansas and Missouri, he has lived in this section of Jasper county.
June 6, 1868 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Dewitt at Newton. To this union fourteen children were born. Hattie, Milton and an infant son died. Elevin Robert of LeCoupton, Kans., Joseph of Colfax, Lewis, of Baxter, James, of Hertel, Wis., Mrs. Linnie McKeever, Sac City, Mrs. Christine Runyon of Ingram, Wis., Melvin, of Baxter, Mrs. Leecy Stark, Anderson, Mo., Scott, of Ira, Mrs. Emma Petruski, of Crete, Ill., John of Ames, with the wife and mother survive. All were home except Mrs. Stark who is ill. There are twenty-one grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Schroyer united with the Christian church at Baxter in 1892. He was a cheery, kind-hearted man, who loved his home and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Ira Christian Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. Underwood preached from John 14. A quintet Mesdames Loderbaugh and Wilkins and Messrs. C. E. Davy, Guy Hardenburg and son, with Joy Mason, at the piano sang favorite hymns. Six sons were pall bearers. The flowers were beautiful. Interment was in Ashton cemetery where his children slept.
Those from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Smith, of Kelly, Lewis and Lilice McKeever, Mrs. Guy McKeever and daughter, of Sac City, and many from Baxter, Colfax and Mingo.
