Dr. Anna Joy, one of the most prominently known residents of Newton, died this morning at 12:10 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Eastman.
Dr. Joy was probably more widely known to people of Newton and Jasper county than any other resident of this vicinity, due largely to her many years of dental practice with her husband, here, and also to her ever active interest in the growth and work of Newton and its citizens.
She was 80 years of age at the time of her death and had been born Nov. 13, 1850 at Lexington, Mo., the daughter of Professor James and Mary Ann Hamilton. She lived in Lexington until she was two years of age, when she moved with her parents to Chicago.
Married in Chicago
She was married in Chicago on Nov. 9, 1871 to Dr. A. P. Joy, who was at that time a practicing dentist at that place. They lived there for eight years, coming in 1879 to Newton and has since resided here.
She was a graduate of the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, in the department of dentistry and began her practice in Newton in 1885, assisting her husband in his work. Their two sons, Hollis and Arthur, became members of the firm of dentists during early manhood and since Dr. Joy’s retirement 11 years ago have continued the practice in Newton.
For the past 30 years Dr. Joy has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Eastman, both before her husband’s death, March 12, 1913, and since that time. For the past 11 years she has been an invalid and unable to leave her home.
Surviving Family
She leaves surviving her, two sons, Dr. Hollis J. and Dr. Arthur H. Joy, one daughter, Mrs. J. H. Eastman, one adopted daughter, Mrs. Grace Roe Dean of Chicago, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Will of Pasadena, Calif., and one brother, Charles H. Hamilton of Portland, Ore., besides seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One daughter, Cora, died in infancy.
Dr. Joy was a member of the Mother church of First Christ Science in Boston and had been at one time a member of the Order of Eastern Star, here.
She was recognized for her outstanding attitude of public spiritedness. She built the first apartment house in Newton, the Joy apartments which are located at the corner of East Seventh street North and North Second avenue East. She built the Dr. Joy Dental building at 113 First avenue East, in the year 1903.
Funeral services will be held sometime Friday but further details are pending the arrival home of Dr. Joy’s sons who left the first of the week for a vacation trip in the west.
