Grant Johnson, Former Newton Jeweler, Dies
K. Grant Johnson, 62, of 916 S. 13th Ave. W., a jeweler who operated the Johnson Jewelry Store on the west side of the Newton square for a number of years, died Friday at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held today at the First United Methodist Church.
Dr. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society will be accepted.
Wallace Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Survivors are his wife, Gladys; two sons, Dr. Kenneth Johnson of Camerillo, Calif., and Daniel of Martinsville, Ind.; a grandson, his father, Ralph Johnson of Marshalltown; a brother, Rodney of Overland Park, Kan.; and four sisters, Winona Hunt of Kansas City, Kan., Alice Wing of Des Moines; Helen Bastow of Mount Ayr and Ann Kelley of Glenwood Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the United Methodist Church, president of the RJO, headquarters in Newton, member of the Rotary Club, Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce and Iowa Retail Jewelers Association.
He was past president of the Newton Little League Association, a member of the Newton Country Club and Stanwood Masonic Lodge and was a past president of the Rotary Club.
The son of Ralph W. and Cosie Jones Johnson, he was born May 26, 1918 in Lamoni and was graduated from the University of Iowa at Iowa City.
Mr. Johnson, who came to Newton in 1953, was married to Gladys Hanlon Dec. 15, 1940 in Stanwood
