Thank you for posting the information on the WELLS surname. I'm sorry it may have not helped the original poster. It appears, however, that it may help me. Nearly 6 months after your responses, I now come looking for a Henry S Wells (with the Ohio 166th) and his wife and children. in Jasper & Poweshiek Counties of Iowa several years ago never knowing that another extension of the Wells tree may have been in Humboldt County.
I had not seen your responses this past weekend. I found them after making contact with the library in Humboldt County. I'm glad I came back to the genweb forum for Iowa and looked under the query section.
We have evidence of Henry S and his father (and family) living in Medina County Ohio in the 1840's through the 1860's. We are determining if he is, in fact, related to Wells family in Wayne County, Ohio (next county to the eas). This WELLS branch has numerous family members serving with the Union Army, some not having survived or doing so in ill health.
It looks like Henrietta Wells, Henry S' daughter, born Sept 27 1881 (listed in the 1900 Iowa census as age 19, a teacher) died in Humboldt County having never married. She is enumerated with her parents, Henry S and Elizabeth F Wells. There are 2 other sisters and her brother, Daniel C (WWI veteran) listed that same year. By 1910, Henry and Elizabeth were empty-nesters.
Your response with information on Union Cemetery is helpful in our research and I want to thank you for posting it.
