Winfield Beacon/Wayland News July 20, 2000

Duane Kenneth “Pete” Peterson, 58, of Wayland, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2000 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15, at 10 A.M. at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church south of Wayland, with Pastors Steve Good and Ruben Chupp officiating. Burial was in the North Hill Cemetery. Visitation was after 1 P.M. on Friday July 14, at the Sugar Creek Church where the family met with friends from 6-8:30 P.M. Memorials are established to the Wayland First Responders, Wayland Mennonite Church, and the North Hill Cemetery. According to the family wishes, the casket remained closed. Olson Powell Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Music for the serve was provided by Edie Nebel, pianist, Tim and Amy Myer, vocalists, and Donna Roth, vocalist. Casket bearers were Brad Shelman, Brad Fulton, Bob Gaal, Josh Miller, Dan Crawford and Jeremy Miller. Honorary bearers were Tucker Janecek, Mark Janecek, Darin Lintz, Neil Reichenbach, Maria Roth, Kelli Dwyer, Barry Schnell, Jamie Leichty, Amy Smith, Mark Meyer, Kurt Meyer, and Jeff Meyer.

Mr. Peterson was born on November 30, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant to Kenneth and Ina Mae Boshart Peterson. He spent his early years in the Mt. Union and Olds area graduating from Olds High School in 1959. On August 20, 1960 he married Janet M. Yoder and moved to the Wayland area. She survives. Mr. Peterson was a partner in the family business, Yoder & Sons Inc./Agri-Way Feeds Ltd.

Mr. Peterson was baptized and a lifelong member of the Wayland Mennonite Church where he had served as deacon, trustee, and youth leader. He was active in the Mennonite Disaster Services, currently on the board of directors for North Hill Cemetery, and president of the Wayland Housing Corporation. He was a former president of Parkview Home and a former board member of Crooked Creek Christian Camp. He had served on the Wayland City Council.

Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife, Janet of Wayland; mother, Ina of Wayland; two daughters, Shari Janecek, Wayland and Stacy Peterson, Wayland; and one grandson, Tucker Janecek, Wayland. Mr. Peterson is also survived by two brothers, John (Janice) Peterson, St. Charles, Mo., and Carroll (Cindy) Peterson, Pella; one sister, Anna Marie Peterson, Kansas City, Mo; and one sister-in-law, Sandy (Reiny) Kunze of Leon. Business partners and brothers-in-law surviving include Bob (Donna) Yoder, Dick (Orpha) Yoder, and Don (Kathy) Yoder, all of Wayland.

Surviving nieces and nephews include Ron, Matt, Kirsten, and Karrie Peterson, Cindy Mueller, Cathy Ringer, Troy Kunze, Tami Smith, Theresa Herink, Tonya Lindsey, and Pam, Carrie, Julie, Jeri, and Russ Yoder.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ivan and Elsie Yoder.
