Wayland News – August 21, 1958

Services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Wayland Mennonite Church for Edward Benjamin Wittrig, 74, formerly the Wayland postmaster, who died at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City Friday , August 15, 1958. Mr. Wittrig had been in failing health but had been taken to the hospital on Tuesday. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Zehr Funeral Homer. Rev. Loris Habegger officiated at the services and casket bearers were Harold Rixe, Irvin Rich, Dennis Klopfenstein, Thurlowe Meyer, Aaron Leichty, and Ezra Wittmer. Interment was in North Hill Cemetery.

He was born to John and Mary Wittmer Wittrig just west of Crawfordsville September 22, 1883. Mr. Wittrig married Mabel Wenger of Wayland in November, 1911. He was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Robert, of Pacific Palisades, California, a daughter, Mrs. Mary Sherer, Des Moines; two brothers, Sam of Washington and John of Wayland; and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Rittler of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
