OBITUARY: Wayland News

Phyllis J. Leichty, 74, rural Wayland, died Saturday, October 12, 2002, at her home in Noble. Funeral services were held at 10?30 A.M. Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the Bethel Mennonite Church with Rev. Phil Slabaugh officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Cemetery. Visitation began at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the church with family receiving friends from 5:30 - 8:00 in the evening. A memorial in the name of Phyllis J. Leichty has been established for Crossroads Hospice and the Hymnal fund at the Bethel Mennonite Church. Beatty Funeral Home of Wayland is assisting the family.

Phyllis was born September 10, 1928 in Milford, Nebraska, the daughter of Vernon and Lillie (Stutzman) Stauffer. She was united in marriage to Ellis Leichty May 9, 1948 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.

She was an active member of Bethel Mennonite Church and taught Sunday School. Phyllis was active also with Women Aglow and the Iowa Christian Theater. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers, and bird watching.

Survivors include her husband Ellis of Noble, three sons, Roland Leichty and wife B.J. of Wakarusa, Indiana, Fred Leichty and wife Jane of Noble, Kevin Leichty and wife Dawn of Mt. Pleasant; daughter Peggy Leichty of Iowa City, Ia; one brother, Dareld Stauffer of Wayland and one sister, Carol Swartzendruber of Westminster, Colorado and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Wayne Leichty.
