Charles Osborn Van Dyke, age 87, of Winfield, died Friday, January 9, 2004 in Iowa City. The son of Clifford and Cleo (Osborn) Van Dyke, he was born December 19, 1916 near Winfield. On June 9, 1937, he married Dorothy Moody who survives. Charles was a 1935 graduate of the Winfield High School and attended Business College at Fort Madison. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1944-46 making 10 round trips across the Pacific Ocean on a troop transport. He was employed at the Peoples State Bank of Winfield from 1937 until retiring in 1978, having served as President for many years. He remained an active board member and President of the Holding Corporation until 2001. He was a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Lions Club. He served as city treasurer for many years and was a school board member for six years. He was an original member of the Twin Lakes Country Club Board and served as treasurer for the first eight years. He was a 60 year member of the Unaliyi Card Club. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, gardening, reading, playing cards, and play with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. The couple spent 18 winters in Mesa, Arizona after retiring. They also were hosts to two foreign exchange students, Bergman Barba (Chacho) in 1964-65 and then his sister, Roxanna, in 1978-79, both from Bolivia. He was a 70+ year member of the Winfield United Methodist Church and held various offices in the Sunday School and church board.

Survivors include his wife of Winfield; one son, Gary Van Dyke of Galesburg, IL, and daughter Julie Rathmell (Ed) of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dorothy Woline and Bernice Van Vranken.

Funeral services were held Tuesday January 13, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. from the United Methodist Church in Winfield with Rev. Greg Carr and Fred Koffend officiating. Interment followed at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.

Friends called from noon until 7:00 P.M> on Monday January 12 at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield where the family met with friends from 4:00-6:00 P.M. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church and the Public Library, both of Winfield.
