Isaac L. Garretson was the son of John G. and Mary Goodson Garretson. He was born in Franklin County, Ohio July 18, 1831. Died at Salem, Iowa May 3, 1914 at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 15 days.

Mr. Garretson came to Iowa with his parents in 1849 and settled in Salem. He was married to Patience Ann Tomlinson in Salem, Iowa September 10, 1859. To this union were born eight children: Frank B., Worcester, Mass.; Fred W., Hamilton, Illinois; Maude Widdifield , Mt. Hamill, Daisy Townsend, Salem; John W., Mrs. Nellie Hummell, Edwin A., and George Clifton, the four latter having preceded their father to the other world. The living children were all present to witness his departure.

Mr. Garretson was a man of high moral ideas and great integrity of character. He was a lover of humanity—charitable and kind to all. He was ever true to his ideals and was always ready to lend a helping hand to any cause that promised good to his fellow men. His philosophic mind was fully stored with facts from a wide field of information which few men possess. During his illness, he was tenderly cared for by his loving wife assisted by his daughter, Mrs. Daisy Townsend and her faithful husband who gave him every attention that kind hands could bestow.

Mr. Garretson leaves to mourn his loss his faithful wife, four children, 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the house conducted by James A. Throop of Mt. Pleasant and Rev. O. G. Missmore of Salem. Interment was made in the East cemetery.
