W. H. Clifton Passes Away

Pioneer Resident and the Last of A Henry County Pioneer Family was 86 Years Old

W. H. Clifton, the last of a pioneer Henry County family and a lifetime resident of the Wayland community , died at 1 o’clock Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Jacob Goldsmith where he has been staying for the past four or five years.

Mr. Clifton was born December 20, 1848 and was in his 86th year. He has been able to be about town up to within the past week, but succumbed to old age after a gradual worsening process of over a year’s duration.

Mr. Clifton was born on the Clifton homestead northwest of town and with the exception of the last few years, had no other home. He was the son of Charles and Mary Clifton. His father at one time represented Henry County in the Iowa Assembly. He died December 17, 1855 and the mother died June 15, 1899.

Besides his parents, Will was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane and Esther. The former died Feb. 17, 1915 and the latter on August 31, 1864; also two brothers, John H. who died June 16, 1846 and Elisha, a member of Co. D 4th Iowa Cavalry who died June 5, 1862.

Will Clifton was a highly respected citizen of Henry County. Everyone knew him a lifetime and his familiar appearance in town will be greatly missed.

He was a member of the local Masonic lodge for over 20 years and it was at his request that he be accorded a Masonic funeral. Definite funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
