Evan Davies

Evan Davies was born in South Wales August 3, 1842 and died in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, March 10, 1920 aged 77 years, 7 months, and 16 days.

Mr. Davies emigrated to this country with his parents in 1853, he being a lad of 11 years, and settled in Henry County. He was educated here in the district schools. Then he attended Howe’s Academy in Mt. Pleasant for two years. Later he graduated from the Great Western Business College at Mt. Pleasant, receiving the diploma of “Bachelor of Accounts”. Most of his life he passed on the farm which he inherited from his father a few years after his marriage.

He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Williams, November 29, 1870. To this union were born six children, three of whom are deceased. Mr. Davies was actively interested in public affairs, serving as Township Clerk and treasurer of Independent School District No. 5. He also served as Justice of the Peace and Trustee. He was also actively interested in the affairs of the church, having been a member of the Methodist church, always bearing his share of the responsibility until weakened by age and illness. He had implicit faith in God and was ready to depart and be with God. Frequently during his illness he expressed his desire to be taken home. About 10 years ago Mr. Davies suffered a stroke of paralysis, and his strength has since gradually declined. About three years ago he suffered a second stroke. Last June another followed. On January 1st this year he suffered what was thought to be something between paralysis and apoplexy, which finally resulted in his death.

Evan Davies was a man of sterling character and great strength of mind. He is commended by all who knew him for his integrity and unrighteousness. He was a well furnished and a broad gauged man, taking an active interest as we have seen, in the affairs of both church and state.

He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his wife, one brother, Henry Davies of Wayland, Iowa; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Davis of Wyman, Iowa, Mrs. Lizzie Park of Washington, Iowa, and Mrs. Will Sutherland of Washington, Iowa, also 3 daughters, Mrs. Adam Foggy of New London, Iowa, Mrs. William Allison of Tacoma, Washington, and Mrs. George Hill of Mt. Pleasant; also six grandchildren. The funeral services were held at his home Monday, March 22, 1920, conducted by Pastor W. R. Keesey of the First Methodist church, assisted by Dr. T. J. Myers, an old time friend of the family. The male quartette composed of Ross Walker, W. H. Evans, Ralph Campbell, and Will Campbell sang very comfortingly. The pallbearers were Joseph Davis, Henry Davis, Homer Davis, W. O. Jones, F. B. Montgomery, and E. L. Weir.

Interment was made in the beautiful Forest Home Cemetery.
