Wayland News – June 8, 1910

Julius Cox was born in Columbiana County. Ohio, February 9, 1841. In the fall of 1844 he removed with his parents to New London, Iowa, where he resided until he was married to Miss Hulda Brotzer, November 4, 1871. To this union were born two daughters; the oldest, Mrs. Wilbur Roberts died Feb. 8, 1904. On September 23, 1861, he enlisted in the 1st Regiment Engineers Missouri Volunteers and served until November 1, 1865 when he was discharged. On June 11, 1903, Mr. Cox was stricken with paralysis since which time he has been an invalid. But although he had been afflicted he was always patient and cheerful. He was a member of the United Brethren Church and often expressed his readiness to go when the Master called.

He died May 31, 1910, aged 69 years, 3 months, and 22 days. He leaves a wife, one daughter, two brothers and one sister to mourn his departure.

The funeral was held last Friday. There was a short service of a couple of songs, a prayer by Rev. J. D. Richards of Cottonwood, and the large audience drove to Green Mount where Rev. Wm. Ballard of Wayland assisted by Rev. S. M. Musselman, conducted services in the church, where a very large audience had gathered to pay their respects to one who was highly respected by all who knew him. The church was crowded to its full seating capacity and the services were solemn, interesting, and instructive.

Mrs. Cox requested that old soldiers act as bearers and Comrades M. V. B. Morris, D. S. McConnaughey, Reese Allen, J. C. Alter, J. Dolph, and James Manning were selected to officiated in that capacity. Comrade Cox was a faithful soldier and a good man. He has gone to his reward. “Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord. From henceforth they rest from their labors and their works do follow them.”
