Joseph Kauffman was born in upper Michelback, Alsace, France, March 17, 1829. He died at the home of his daughter near Wayland, Iowa on Christmas evening, 1920, aged 91 years, 9 months, 8 days.

He came to America in April 1855. For some time he stayed in Wayne County Ohio and later he came to Iowa.

On June 18, 1867 he was united in marriage with Fanny Rich. This union was blest with five children.

He accepted Christ as his personal Savior while a young man, uniting with the Amish Mennonite church and remained a faithful member until called by death.

His wife, one son, and one daughter preceded him in death. He leaves three children, John and Mary Kauffman of Nobel, Iowa and Barbara Widmer of Wayland, Iowa, one grandchild, a host of relatives, friends, and neighbors to mourn their loss.
