C. W. Roth is Laid to Reest Last Thursday

Funeral Services are held at the Wayland Mennonite Church by Revs. Basinger and Prtichard

The funeral services of the late C. W. Roth were held at the Wayland Mennonite church last Thurs. afternoon at 1:30 PM and were in charge of Revs. Basinger and Pritchard. Interment was made beside his wife in the Sugar Creek cemetery. The pallbearers were his nephews P. P. Wyse, Simon Wyse, C. R. Wyse, Sam Wyse, Christ Roth, and Paul Roth. Although 85 years of age at the time of his death, Mr. Roth up to five or six weeks ago was to town daily greeting his many friends in his jovial way. Mr. Roth was always an optimist and during his long residence here was the dispenser of mirth wherever he mingled with his friends. We will all miss him for this trait which makes life’s highway just a little smoother.

Christian W. Roth, son of Christian and Catherine Roth, was born in the province of Alsace Lorraine France on 4/10/1845. In 1856 his parents emigrated to America and settled on a farm near Wayland, Iowa where the deceased grew to manhood and spent the greater part of his life. In his youth he made his profession of faith in Christ as his personal Savior. He was baptized by Rev. Goldsmith and was received into the fellowship of the Mennonite Church.

On 2/12/1877 he was united in the bonds of matrimony with Fannie Augsburger. This union was blessed with seven children of whom one died in infancy and on son, Oscar, in his early manhood. They resided on the home farm, south of town, until 1907 when they moved to Wayland where his wife died the same year. Since the death of his wife, he made his home with his son Albert where he passed away last Tues. November 4, 1930, after a lingering illness of several months. He reached the ripe old age of 85 years, 6 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn his departure 3 sons, Albert and Edward of Wayland and Harry of Burlington. Two daughters Mrs. Clyde Clark and Mrs. Edd Kauffman of near Wayland, four daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Fanny Mast of Wayland and one brother, Joseph of Noble besides many other relatives and friends. There is no night in heaven, In that blessed world above, work can never bring weariness, for work itself is love.
