OBITUARY

Mrs. Nels Peterson

Mrs. Nels Peterson was born in Tjernagel, Norway, July 9, 1842. She was married to Nels Peterson Okland April 3, 1863. In the spring of 1864 she came to America with her husband and infant child and made their home with her brother, O. A. L. Tjernagel, for a short time. During the winter of '64 and '65 Mr. Peterson cut logs on some land he had bargained for and built a log house on the place where they lived up to his death. This farm is northeast of Randall a short distance.

They celebrated their golden wedding April 3, 1913, and a few weeks after this celebration they made a trip to Norway to again see the place each was born. Mr. Peterson died there and in interred in the Egeland cemetery. Mrs. Peterson with a sad heart returned home alone. Indeed a very sad ending to their golden wedding trip. Mr. Peterson died Sept. 25, 1918.

Nearly all the time since her husband died she made her home in Story City. While living here she had with her the youngest daughter, Carrie, who with loving hands and deeds did everything possible to make her last years pleasant and happy. Honor be to a daughter or son who takes care of their parents in their declining years.

To this union 12 children were born, of which five died, four in infancy and Martha at the age of 26 years. The seven living are P. L. Peterson, Blairsburg; Mrs. Helen Swenson, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Peter Owenson, Randall; Misses Regina and Agnes Peterson, Ft. Dodge; Miss Carrie Peterson, Story City, and N. J. Peterson, Randall, who farms the home place. Besides her children she leaves 15 grand children and 11 great grand children, besides a host of relatives and friends.

She was the youngest of a family of eight children, all of which preceded her to the great beyond. At the time of her death she was 84 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Mr. and Mrs. Nels Peterson at the time they came to America, were like all other newcomers, not rich in this world's needs. She had the usual pioneer woman's trials and privations. But by diligent and careful management they had acquired an independence so she had no worries during her declining years.

She was a member of the St. Petri congregation all the years since 1864 and from this church her last march proceeded to Mamrelund cemetery where she rests after a long day's work well done. The Rev. Scarvie officiated at the church and cemetery. The pall bearers were her nephews: B. A. Anderson, P. G. Tjernagel, M. O. Tjernagel, N. Tjernagel, Martin Olson and L. J. Tjernagel. Again we have escorted one of our pioneer friends to their last resting place. In her pioneer home neighborhood only two are left. Blessed be her memory. L.J.T.
