Obituary of Ben M. Hoversten

The funeral of the late Ben M. Hoversten was held last Saturday afternoon, April 23, brief services at the home being followed by the service at two o'clock at the St. Paul's Lutheran church, north of Rosendale. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. O. Oppedal. At the home a beautiful duet, "My Home Is In Heaven, My Home Is Not Here," was sung by Mr. Theodore Quam and Mrs. Ben Anderson.

At the service in the church Mr. Quam and Mrs. Anderson sang "Beautiful City of God" and two songs were sung by the octet, "Abide with Me," and "My Jesus, As Thou Wilt." It was the request of the deceased that the latter song which had been of great comfort to him, be sung at his funeral.

Rev. Oppedal's sermon was based upon the text: I John 3:2. Rev. G. O. Paulsrud brought a message of comfort to the bereaved, after which Rev. L. A. Mathre, a broth of Mrs. Hoversten, expressed thanks in behalf of the family to the neighbors and friends for the kindness and prayers during the illness the death of their loved one. This was brought out fittingly in Ruth 8: "The Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with him and me."

The body was laid to rest in St. Paul's cemetery, beside the bodies of his mother and brother Henry. The octet sang at the grave, "Asleep in Jesus, Blessed Sleep." The pall bearers were members of the Lake Center octet, Theodore and Truman Quam, Gerhard and Eugene Fardal, Lars Omvig and Helmer Satre. Floral tributes were many and very beautiful.

In memory of the departed, ten dollars were given to the missions by the Mathre family and twelve dollars by the Ladies Aid.

Bennie Martin Hoversten, son of T. J. and Gertrude Hoversten, was born on the farm in Clear Lake township, Hamilton county, Iowa, March 8th, 1890, and died at his home in that community at five o'clock Wednesday afternoon, April 20, aged 37 years, 1 month and 12 days. Death resulted after a sickness of about 11 years of chronic nephritis.

Practically his entire lifetime was spent in this community where he was known and held in the highest regard by an unusually wide circle of friends by whom he will long be missed. He attended Jewell Lutheran college and at S. A. U. M. at St. Paul, giving up his studies in his junior year because of ill health.

He was married April 10, 1917, at Stanhope, to Miss Anna Louise Mathre. To this union two children surviving. The children are Stanley Tennyson, aged 7, and Gloria Hortense, aged 4 years.

He is also survived by his father, four brothers and two sisters: Theodore of Jewell, Jacob of Story City, Albert, George and Mrs. Ole Pederson of Thompson, and Mrs. Arthur Bockwoldt of Stanhope.

Deceased was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, was one of the members of the Lake Center male octet, and was always prominent in church and community activities in the community where he resided. His death is a severe loss to the entire community, as well as to the grief-stricken family, the members of whom have the deepest sympathy of a host of friends of their bereavement.
