Rhinebeck Standard, Dec. 25: It was hardly a surprise to our people Monday morning when the word was circulated that father J. W. Gordon had given up the battle for life and had entered into his eternal sleep. He had been struggling with a hard attack of pneumonia for several days, and at his advanced age the battle was almost a losing one from the first. Mr. Gordon was one of the quiet unassuming kind of men who always won a warm place in the hearts of those who came to know him, and his corner in the homes of his children where he has been making his abode during the past few years of his life, will be sadly vacant. His helpful influence was always felt wherever he went and his deeds of usefulness done in that same quiet manner will never be forgotten.

J. W. Gordon was born in Canada, November 16, 1823, and passed out of this life December 23, 1907, which means he had reached the age of 84 years, 1 month and 7 days at the time of his death. His wife long ago preceded him to the other world as did one daughter, but there are still seven boys and four girls that are here to miss his departure. The children are somewhat scattered through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and other parts of the middle west but probably more are in this part of Iowa than any other place.

Mr. Gordon came to Iowa twenty-six years ago and settled near Garrison which locality has been considered his home ever since. Short services will be held today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Mason where he died, and the remains will be taken to Garrison this afternoon and regular burial services will take place tomorrow, the interment being in the Garrison cemetery by the side of his wife.

{Submitter comment: This is my wife's side of the family. Her mother's father's grandfather. (whew!)}
