E. B. STILLMAN DEAD.

Was a Pioneer Resident of Fort Atkinson and Prominent in Iowa Journalism.

On Sunday last at the home of his son F. J. Stillman at Riceville, Edwin B. Stillman, a pioneer of Fort Atkinson and one of Iowa’s best known newspaper men, passed away at the age of seventy-six years. We are without material data concerning his life, but the following taken from the Des Moines Capital of Monday will give an insight to the character of the man as he was known to intimate friends:--
Mr. Stillman came of sturdy New England ancestry, being a native of Connecticut. He learned the trade of a printer and after coming west was foreman at one time of the old Des Moines Register. He had the distinction of having been the founder of the Sioux City Journal in 1863—a paper which he conducted for three years after which he removed to Chicago for a time, where he was engaged in the job printing business.
To most Iowans of the present day Mr. Stillman was perhaps best known through his editing and publishing of the Jefferson Bee. He made the Bee one of the model weekly newspapers of the state and the same is now published by his son Paul, former speaker of the Iowa house of representatives.
Edwin B. Stillman was recognized as a man of sterling character. He exemplified the best ideals of citizenship. His impulses were patriotic and he enlisted in the Second Iowa Infantry, Company D, in 1863, but was discharged for physical disability. The activities of business life did not prevent his taking a keen interest in church and Sunday school work and his counsel in such matters was sought and valued. Throughout his life his influence was exerted in behalf of the betterment of his fellow man and he never preached a moral doctrine which he did not practice himself.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Oct. 4, 1837 and died Nov. 16, 1913. He is buried in the Waucoma Cemetery.
