Death Claims Nic Schmitt
Passed away at Holy Cross Saturday Evening After Long Illness

Funeral took place Tuesday Morning at 10 o'clock Interment in Cemetery Nearby
Holy Cross, IA. April 21 - Mr. Nickolas M. Schmitt, one of the pioneer residents of this place died at the family home here Saturday evening, April 17th after a lingering illness.

Deceased was born Jan 18, 1862, and lived all his life on a farm near Holy Cross. Two wives preceded him in death. The first marriage was to Miss Anna Pfohl on Feb 6, 1890. Her death occurred September 12, 1896. The second marriage to Miss Mary Lucas occurred June 12, 1901, she dying April 11, 1903. One son Michael also preceded him in death.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Frank and Charles of Holy Cross, Anthony of Dubuque, (Alvina) Mrs. Leo Kraus, Farley; ( Gertrude) Mrs. John Webber, of Holy Cross; also the following brothers and sisters; Anthony of Whittemore, IA.; Peter of Caledonia, Minn.; Frank of Farley; Theodore of Holy Cross; Mrs. Matt Konzen of Farley; Mrs. Charles Hess of Dyersville, also six grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at ten o'clock at Holy Cross church, burial was made in the adjoining cemetery. rev. Father Lorenz officiated.

The following men acted as pallbearers; Theo Schneider, Mike Schnieder, Mike Ruden, Anton Konzen Sr., Peter Diesburg, Steve Schroeder.

The out of Iowa people at the funeral were, Anton Schmitt, Whittemore, Ia.; Mr and Mrs Pete Schmitt, Caledonia Minn.; Mrs. Nick __, Mr. and Mr.s Anton Pfohl, Pete Pfohl, and son Louis, Mrs. Emil J. Meyer, Mr and Mrs John Hermes, John Haggerty, Joe Pins, Mr and Mrs. Ed Heiberger, all of Dubuque, Nick Hentges, of New Hampton, Mrs. Phillips and son Verne, Topeka, Kansas.

Mr. Schmitt was one of the most widely known and highly esteemed residence of Dubuque County, an enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him. He was a devoted to all his family and always lent a helping hand to those in need. He was a devout Catholic and lived strictly in accord with he teachings of his faith.

His first wife's name was Anna P. Pfohl. His second wife's name was Mary Lucas.
