Gerald P. "Jerry" Stoffel, 69, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, of Glioblastoma brain cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Thursday, March 2, at Church of Resurrection. Rev. Joseph Hauer will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #6 and the Epworth American Legion Post #650. Friends may greet the family from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30.

Jerry was born October 10, 1947, in Dubuque, the son of Francis "Rex" Stoffel and Gertrude (Sigwarth) Stoffel. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1965. He served his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1968. Jerry graduated from Loras College in 1973 with a B.A. in Sociology. He married the love of his life, Karen Pape, on January 8, 1977, at Church of the Resurrection, where he continued to be a member for the next 40 years. From 1970-1989, he was employed in road construction at Tri-State Paving, Mathey Construction, Horsfield Construction, Tschiggfrie Construction, and Hamel Paving. In 1989, Jerry went to work for the City of Dubuque as a Building Inspector, retiring from the position in April of 2016. Jerry had a lifelong love for skiing, and served as volunteer Ski Patrol at Sundown for 28 years. Jerry and his family took many ski trips to Colorado along with visiting half of the states and Argentina. Jerry and Karen continued to travel and visited all 50 states and Chile. Jerry also enjoyed reading, hiking in the fall, riding his motorcycle, and biking. He was a member of the Epworth American Legion.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Karen, of Dubuque; three children, Tyler (Jean), of Chicago, Jestin (Michelle), of Madison, WI, and Mitchel (Cora) Stoffel, of Dubuque; Christian Toews- a foreign exchange student who became like a son - and his children Victoria and Pilar of Angostura, Argentina; four grandchildren, Connor, Aurora, Elliott, and George; his mother, Gertrude McDermott, of Cascade; six siblings, Betty (Bill) Mausser, of Epworth, Marilyn (Dan) Mason, of Rainy River, Canada, Darlene Meyer, of Cascade, Margie (Mike) Kane, of Epworth, Rick Stoffel, of Bankston, and Kevin Stoffel, of Superior, CO; his mother-in-law, Maureen Pape, of Dubuque; three sisters-in-law, Connie (Joe) Ertel, of Silvis, IL, Kris (Greg) Zeller, of Davenport, IA, and Janel (Darren) Glover, of Montgomery, IL; 17 nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his brother-in-law, Dennis Meyer; and his father-in-law, Norbert Pape.

The family would like to thank the VA in Dubuque and Iowa City for all the generosity, support, and care.
