Obituary, The Hawk Eye, November 21, 1999; Burlington, Iowa:

Howard D. Borders, 69, of 405 East Henry, Mount Pleasant, died at 7:42 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, 1999, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born February 15, 1930, near Yarmouth, he was the son of Alfred and Josephine Young Borders. He married Barbara L. Miller on July 24, 1949, in Morning Sun. She died December 17, 1997.

Mr. Borders was a 1948 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He worked for Henry County Maintenance Department for several years as a vehicle mechanic, was a route driver for Colonial Bread Company from 1953 to 1968, and worked at Vega Industries until 1977, when he began working for Mount Pleasant Community School District in maintenance at the junior high school. He delivered school buses for Blue Bird Bus Company of Mount Pleasant and later coordinated other drivers in the delivery program until retiring in 1997.

He was of the Methodist faith. During high school, he played baseball and was part of the traveling baseball team. He later coached Little League in Mount Pleasant. He enjoyed all types of sports and professional ball games on TV.

Survivors include three sons, Robert of Keokuk, Roger and Edward, both of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Peggy White of Casa Grande, Arizona, and Beverly Borders of Mount Pleasant; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Willard Borders of Alpha, Illinois, Marion Borders of Cedar Rapids and Cleo Borders of Davenport; and three sisters, Mabel Schade of Vinton, Janet Johnston of Mountain View, Missouri, and Lola Webster of Rock Island, Illinois.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Borders will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Weir Funeral Home, with the Reverend Kiboko Kiboko officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the dialysis unit of Henry County Health Center.
