I can't speak to the quality of land in Fayette co. vs Clayton co. - maybe a local farmer can chime in on this query.

Your Goodrich family didn't move too far though, probably less than 25 miles depending on where in Springfield twp. they lived.

They may have found a farm that was more suited to their family - like a bigger house, more out-buildings, etc. Maybe they didn't live near enough to a school house or a church of their denomination and moved for that reason. Just speculating ..... there are dozens of reasons why a family would move. If you have the Range/Twp/Section of the Fayette land & the Clayton land, you could use Google map to view both in the satellite view.
