BURKHARD SHOENSTINE.
Burkhard Shoenstine, well known by many old comrades and friends in this vicinity, died at his home in Ionia Monday, March 4, 1907, at the age 70 years, 4 months and 21 days.
The deceased was born in Neiderharison, Berlin, Germany, Oct 11, 1836. He came to America when he was about 26 years old and settled in Freeport, Ill. When the war broke out he enlisted in Company C, 46th Illinois Infantry and fought bravely for his country for three years when he received an honorable discharge. April 25, 1870, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Trappen at Freeport, Ill., and to them were born eight children, who with the faithful wife, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted husband and father. They came to Chickasaw county, Iowa, about 14 years ago. Most of the time has been spent on farms, they living on the Kraft or Longhorn farm when their home was destroyed by fire and they suffered a heavy loss. Some 30 years ago Mr. Shoenstine lost his arm when working with a thrashing machine and with only one arm he worked on, and often did more than many with two.
Some four years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and about twelve weeks ago another, and since then he has been a patient sufferer until his death Monday afternoon. The children, with the exception of Frank, who lives in Bellingham, Wash., and Mrs. Emma Kinsey, at Freeport, Ill., were all near here and helped to care for him during his long sickness. Funeral was held at the St. Boniface Catholic church, Thursday, March 7, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Fr. Puetz, and the remains were laid to rest in Mt. Rose Cemetery.
The deceased was an honest up-right man, a good neighbor, and a kind and indulgent husband and father in his home. The devoted wife and family have the sympathy of their many friends at this time.
