William W. "Bill" Shaffer, 71, Ventura, and Clear Lake area farmer died on Saturday, April 29, at a Mason City Hospital following an illness of several years.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 2 at the First Congregational Church, the Rev. Kenneth Ubbelohde officiating.

Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Tom Treloar was organist. The Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangmenets.

William Wesley Shaffer was born in Clear Lake on January 3, 1907 the son of John and Ada (Smail) Shaffer. Following a rural education he helped with farming and later worked for the Clear Lake Sand and Gravel Company.

Shaffer was married to Marcia Hickok on June 29, 1939 at her parents' home. They lived in Clear Lake where he did some painting and was with Mid-Continent Oil Company. In 1955 they moved to their present farm, and farmed with Mrs. Shaffer's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Pearl M. Hickok.

Shaffer is survived by his wife Marcia, two sons, Larry of Ventura, Ia. and Arlan of Porterville, Ca. two grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Charley (Dolly) Smith, and Mrs. Arvin (Alta) Bunting, both of Clear Lake and Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Butts of Fremont, Ca.

Shaffer was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. He was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Car escorts were Harlan Toppin and Owen Taylor.

Pallbearers were Milford Knutson, Fred Banks, Dorance Rosendahl, James Davis, Sam Arnold and Wayne Johnson.
