Melvin Sissel

Funeral services for Melvin “Mel” L. Sissel, 1930-2007, 77, Oshkosh, Neb., were held Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 at Holechek Funeral Home Chapel in Oshkosh, with Wayne Fraass, P.M.A. and Sharon Paulsen officiating. Interment was in the Ash Hollow cemetery near Lewellen, Neb., with military honors by the Nebraska National Guard and V.F.W. Post No. 5379.

Mr. Sissel died Sept. 26 at the Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh.

The son of George and Luella Schweitzer Sissel, he was born June 7, 1930 in Tipton. He grew up in Tipton and graduated from Tipton high school in 1948. He worked at Alcoa in Davenport. He married Helen Rae Nighbert on June 9, 1951 in Rochester.

The couple made their home in Tipton and then moved to Swisher, Cedar Rapids, Lincoln, Neb., North Bend, Neb., Lewellen, Neb. And Oshkosh, Neb.

Mr. Sissel was employed by Square D in Cedar Rapids and later transferred to Lincoln, Neb. He and his wife bought a bowling alley in North Bend, Neb. In 1975. They also ran a vending company.

He joined the U.S. Navy on Jan. 8, 1952 and served until Dec. 12, 1955, when he was honorably discharged.

Mr. Sissel was active in the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department and served on the city council. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known as a kind man with a dry sense of humor that will be greatly missed.

Mr. Sissel is survived by 3 sons, Wayne and wife Lea Sissel, Broomfield, Colo.; Kyle and wife Paula Sissel, Oshkosh, Neb.; and Darroll and wife Kathy Sissel, North Bend, Neb.; 6 grandchildren, Karly Sissel, Jessica Rinaker, Christopher Sissel, Blake Sissel, Ashley Sissel and Sean Sissel; 3 great-grandchildren, Hannah Sissel, Reese Rinaker and Amaya Ronk, 2 brothers, George and wife Peg Sissel, DeWitt; and John and wife Darlene Sissel, Anamosa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 29, 2007 and his parents.

Memorials may be made to Riverview Assisted Living in Lewellen, Neb. Or the North Bend VFW Park in North Bend, Neb.
