October 14, 1965 - The Tipton Conservative

Mrs. Fred Wilke, 65, was instantly killed and her husband was seriously injured in a car-truck accident 7 miles west of Vinton at 11:10 a.m. Oct. 8.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilke were traveling west on Iowa 218, toward Waterloo, when he turned south toward Iowa 198 and was struck b a semi-trailer truck. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wilke were thrown from their car, under the tractor of the semi-trailer.

The driver of the semi-trailer unit, Joseph A. Satterfield of Newberg, Ind., told Highway Patrolman Paul Janette of Vinton that the Wilke car made what he considered a "normal" left turn in front of his truck. Another motorist, who was stopped at the exit of Iowa 198 onto Iowa 218 also told investigating officers that the Wilke car turned in front of the truck.

Patrolman Janette said that Iowa 218 is marked by dividing strips at the "T" intersection of the 2 highways. Iowa 198 connects Iowa 218 with Garrison, which is 3 miles south of the intersection.

Mr. Wilke was first taken to the Vinton hospital and then transferred to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. He received severe spine and abdominal injuries and has been in traction since he was taken to St. Luke's hospital.

Wilke is still unconscious. He underwent brain surgery Monday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Wilke were held Oct. 11 at the First Methodist church in Tipton with the Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Pallbearers were Arnold Conrad, Ralph Marquis, Forrest Ford, Carl Ehresman, Fred Boettcher and Merl Carroll. Mrs. Richard Palmer was vocalist and Mrs. Irma Crawford, organist. Mrs. Lloyd Kallenberger, Mrs. Frieda Kleppe, Mrs. Robert Mineck and Mrs. Hans Freese were in charge of flowers. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Clara Belle, the daughter of Jake and Clara Belle Willey Cryder, was born Nov. 20, 1899, at Bennett and attended the rural Cedar county schools near Bennett. She was married to Fred Wilke at Bennett March 6, 1924.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilke lived in the Tipton and Bennett communities where she was a member of the Kings Daughters, the Federated Study club, W.S.C.S. and the First Methodist church.

She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Virgil (Jean) Wegener, Tipton; a brother, Earl Cryder, Davenport and 3 grandchildren.
