23 September 1965 - The Tipton Conservative

Last rites for John W. Tevis, 79, retired Tipton carpenter, were held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Sheets and Son funeral home with the Rev. Harold Gillaspie in charge. Burial was in the Shawver cemetery near Cedar Bluff.

Pallbearers were Dale, M. Joe and Donald Stiff, William Butterbrodt, M. L. Gesme and Frank Gordon. Mrs. Irma Crawford was organist and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Graham and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Stiff were in charge of flowers.

Mr. Tevis died early Sept. 18 at University hospital, Iowa City, following a short illness.

The son of William and Mary Ann Stout Tevis, he was born near Buchanan Feb. 4, 1886, and was educated in the rural Cedar county schools.

He was married to Hazel Miller in Rock Island, Ill., Jan. 30, 1918. He spent his life in the Cedar county area where he worked as a carpenter. He had been living for the last few years in Rochester.

He served as a private in the army from 1905 to 1908 and later served with the Iowa National Guard. He was a member of the Tipton Moose lodge.

He is survived by 3 sons: Roy and George, Tipton; Clarence, Bettendorf; a brother, Jacob, Delano, Calif.; a sister, Della Tevis, Tipton; 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife.
