Amanda R. Gruwell was born in Indiana and with her parents, Thomas and Dorcas Reeves, moved to Iowa and lived in or near West Branch. August 22nd, 1863, she was united in marriage to Thomas S. Gruwell, oldest son of Moses and Ann Gruwell. To them were born four sons: Elmer T. who lives at 913 East Lynn St. Seattle, Washington and is pastor of the North Broadway church; Calvin M. lives in Arcadia, Calif.; Louis died in infancy and Clarence R. lives in Los Angeles, Calif.

The husband and father was translated June 21, 1899 and the following February the mother and the two younger sons moved to Pasadena where she has resided since. She was a birth rite member of the Society of Friends but in middle life united with the Methodist church and maintained an active interest in the church up to the close of this life January 16, 1932. She lived an active, unselfish and useful life. About six years ago she fell and received injuries that confined her to the hospital for several months and from which she never fully recovered but the past two years she has been an invalid and gradually the frail body failed. Surrounded by members of her family and a large circle of friends and with the tenderest of care she closed this earthly life in the 85th year the interment being made in the beautiful Mountain View Cemetery in Pasadena.
