Graveside services for Walter Mason Mathews, of Murfreesboro, who died Tuesday at home, were scheduled to be held Friday at Tipton Masonic Cemetery in Tipton, Iowa.

A native of Tipton and the son of the late Thomas Edgar and Anna Leota Hill Mathews, he is survived by his wife, Bertha Beyer Mathews; one daughter, Schael Ann Engel of Williamsburg, Iowa; a son, Frederic Mason Mathews of Murfreesboro; a brother, Charles Mathews of San Gabriel, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

He was a retired clinical psychologist, receiving his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa. During his career he was employed at the New Orleans Child Guidance Clinic, the University of Hawaii, the Merrill-Palmer Institute in Detroit and the U.S. Bureau of Medicine at Bethesda, Md., Naval Hospital.

He also taught at Wayne State University, University of Detroit and Pembroke State University and was past president of the American Orthopsychiatric Association and the Michigan Psychological Association. He was a commander in the U.S. Navy during World war II and a mason.
