4 June 1874 - The Tipton Advertiser

DEATH BY DROWNING--A young man, about 18 years of age, from Mechanicsville, named Franklin Hyde, while seineing in a bayou above Gower's Ferry last Sunday afternoon, was accidently drowned. his companions tried every possible effort to rescue him from a watery grave, but all their exertions proved unavailing. Coroner Wilhelm was summoned to the scene, and an inquest held by him over the body with the result as shown by the following verdict:
"An inquisition holden at the house of M. I. Miller, at Gower's Ferry, on the 31st day of May, 1874, before B. Wilhelm, Coroner of said county, upon the body of Franklin Hyde, there lying dead, by the jurors whose names are hereto subscribed, that the said Franklin Hyde came to his death by accidental drowning. In testimony whereof the said jurors have hereunto set their hands, the day and year aforesaid. /S/ J. M. Long, Wm. Frankhouser, N. F. Miller
