Adam Guttenfelder, a native of Germany and a resident of Atlantic since 1882, died at
his home here at 5 o’clock Saturday evening at the age of 84.

Death was due mainly to old age. Mr. Guttenfelder had been in poor health for
several months, though it was not until a week ago today that his condition became
critical.

The death of Mr. Guttenfelder removes one of the well known characters of the
community. His long residence here had made him known to many and his sterling
qualities won him a host of friends.

Born in Bavaria

Bavaria, Germany, was the birthplace of Mr. Guttenfelder. He was born there on April
30, 1837. He followed farming until he left to make his home in America. He was
married on June 1, 1862, to Miss Barbara Salcher (Solcher), who survives him.

In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Guttenfelder and their six children came to the United States,
coming directly to Atlantic. This has since been the family home. Besides the wife
there are six sons and daughters surviving. They are Mrs. G. F. Auerbach and Conrad
Guttenfelder of this city; William Guttenfelder of Grove township; Mrs. Eva Brix of
Pymosa township; John and Leonard Guttenfelder of Cedar Rapids. The wife and all
of the children were at Mr. Guttenfelder’s bedside when he passed away.

Leaves Family

A son, Chris Guttenfelder, died about a year ago at Cedar Rapids. Two children died
while the family still lived in Germany. There are twenty-two grandchildren and
fourteen great-grandchildren also surviving.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Evangelical church, of
which the deceased had been a member for many years. The services were
conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John G. Herrlinger. Burial was in Atlantic cemetery.
The pallbearers were grandsons of Mr. Guttenfelder.
