Germans in Carroll County

I have been told that, before the first World War, there were more German language newspapers in Iowa than English. Is this true? I am further told that anti-German sentiment following the Great War, along with the ebbing tide of immigration, caused most of them to quickly fold.

Why did so many German Catholics end up in Carroll County? Many, like my father's side of the family, came from Ankum, Germany.
