John I Brokaw was born in Cayuga county, N. Y , April 30, 1823; died in Clarksville, Iowa, February 12, 1902. He was married to Nancy Beals in New York, February 2, 1847. They continued to reside in New York until 1853 when they moved to McHenry County, III., and there they remained until 1882.

He then brought his family to Iowa, settling on a farm one mile south of Shell Rock. Here his wife passed away on March 8, 1888.

Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brokaw, four of whom survive them. These are Mrs. Mary Kellogg of Cedar Falls, Mrs. H. W. Kitchen of Clarksville, Bert Brokaw of Rowley, Iowa, and John Brokaw whose present address is unknown.

In his prime the deceased was industrious and frugal and thereby laid aside a competence for old age. He was good to his family and respected by his neighbors, and during bis residence with his daughter, Mrs. Kitchen, with whom he resided most of the time in his declining years and at whose home he died, he was greeted by all by the familiar appellation, “Uncle Johnnie," showing for him a warm regard.

Funeral services were held from his late home on Friday, conducted by "Rev. F. T. Heatly., and the remains were taken for interment to the Shell Rock cemetery.
