Robert Allen McDonald, 89, of Independence, Iowa died peacefully Wednesday, June 2,2021 at his home in Independence, Iowa

Robert was born on April 23, 1932, in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Robert Allen and Thelma Viola (MacLennan) McDonald. He was a graduate of the Toledo High School in Toledo, IA. He served in the US Air Force for two years prior to his discharge. Robert was an avid bowler and traveled around the Cedar Valley area competing for many years. In 1974 he was bowling at Lucky 10 Lanes in Independence, there he met Connie Peterson. They quickly developed a friendship and were later married in June of 1975. Together they made their home in Independence where they raised their two children together. Robert worked for many years as a truck driver. He started at Beacon Trucking and drove throughout the Midwest. He felt like he needed to be home more often and took a job driving for the Greenley Elevator in Independence and later worked for Innovative Ag Services in Winthrop, IA.

He really enjoyed watching sports. Robert almost never missed catching the game or the final score of his Chicago Cubs. He would spend hours standing on the side of the field watching and cheering on his son, Mike in his high school sports events.

Robert loved talking with people. Even though a lot of the conversations turned to sports he’d always get a laugh from someone.

He is survived by his wife: Connie McDonald, three children; Robin McDonald, Forest Heights, GA, Mike (Amanda) McDonald, Independence, IA., Megan (Jacob) Severson, Waterloo, IA. 6 grandchildren: Brady, Quentin, Jaxon, Aubrey and Gavin McDonald, and Charlotte Severson, three brothers, Ed MacLennan, Waterloo, IA, Denny (Diane) MacLennan, Iowa City, IA, and Dean (Linda) Long, Manson, IA, four sisters, Pat (Jim) Burnell, Phoenix, AZ, DeeAnne (Larry) Wuebker, Fort Dodge, IA, Carolyn Krabill, Mt Pleasant, IA, and Susan (Ron) Fendt, Watertown, WI.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Thelma McDonald, and a brother, Doug MacLennan.

A Visitation will be held from 1 PM until 4 PM on Sunday June 6, 2021, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 PM on Sunday with Rev. John Sheda presiding.
